Men of any age must read this!

Sept. 2, 2005 - Being physically fit can dramatically reduce men’s deaths from heart disease – even when their cholesterol rates are high, according to a Canadian study that included men up to 79 years of age. Researchers, say, the reduction is as much as 50 percent, regardless of their cholesterol level.

Changing Florida Weather

Well ... the hot humid days of summer are behind us if this past weekend told us what the future holds. My walk Sunday morning was beautiful ... cool (in the 70's) as a light breeze. Did 2 miles, in 30 minutes, so I'm doing quite well with this activity. Going to start with a bit of stretching and weight lifting soon ... doing some reading and videos as far as research.

Going to look for another benefit walk to do with Kathleen ... really enjoyed the 5K Ameirican Heart Association walk we did a few weeks ago!

Something I learned from my Dad yesterday!

Yesterday I attended a ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC. My dad was a member of the honor guard, sent by his chapter of the Purple Heart Veterans of WWII (Chapter 27 in Somerville NJ) to lay a wreath at the Tomb.

My dad never told us much about his experience on Omaha Beach, or in other areas of France during WWII. I knew that he was wounded a couple of times, and that he had received some medals. What I didn't know is the profound effect that combat had on him, and all that faced the terror of war. Hearing taps played at the Tomb, had a profound effect on me, and I really internalized the gift that our soldiers have given me, and our way of life.

A few months after my mom passed away, I convinced dad to get involved with life, and go out and do something. He did ... he joined his chapter and has been incredibly active ever since. I really think that has saved his life. I was really proud of him yesterday when countless numbers of people, young and old, came up to him and thanked him for his service.

But what did I learn yesterday from my dad ... that war is fought by very brave, simple people in defense of their beliefs ... and that life is lived by having close friends and a community that cares for each other.

He's still teaching me at 89!

What a difference a shoe makes!

Well I found an excellent walking/running shoe by Addidas last week. The big difference for me is how the shoe cradles the foot, and provides support in a number of areas. When I did the 5K walk a couple of days ago ... I really felt the difference.
