Can I be overwalking?

I have been walking for around 18 straight days, with no rest. The last few days have been uncomfortable walks, with discomfort mostly on my shins. I think I may need to have a couple of days of recuperative rest, to get back in the game.

I actually went for my walk today and purposly did not wear my watch so I could walk a slower pace. I really didn't work, but I do know that I am walking slower the last few days.

I really don't want to push myself to the point where I dread walking. I really understand the need to walk from a fitness perspective, and also really enjoy the walk.

Bummer!

Got to find a better way to track mileage on the blog. Anybody know of any Java scripts to do this?

My 2 miles translates into 1800 (approx) steps. Gonna calculate a lifetime goal for myself!

Be back later!

On a positive note ...

Terrific walk today ... late afternoon in South Florida was actually a bit chilly (for South Florida) and a delight to take a vigorus walk. Did my 2 miles today in sub 15min/mi time, which for me is excellent, and finished the walk with an Eminem tune!

How good is that!

Seriously ... that beat can boost my pace by 10-20%!

Walk on!

First rant in a long time ...

How fundamentaly stupid are we as a culture ... Washington Post - 1 hour ago .. By Debbi Wilgoren ... The US Air Force mistakenly shipped fuses that are used in nuclear weapons to Taiwan in 2006, believing the crates contained helicopter batteries, officials at the Pentagon announced this morning.

Now I'm no nuclear scientist, but I do know that I have better inventory control on my weighted walking vests at ActiveAuthority.com then the stupid Air Force has over nuclear weapons fuses.

I admit that we all make mistakes, but why did it take 2 years to figure out the mistake.

Do they not inventory these things?

No wonder I like to walk ... I must be trying to walk away from it all!

New Name and Walking Update

As some of you may have noticed, I've changed the name of my blog to better represent my interest in a quest for a fitter lifestyle.

Fitness Walker really represents how I view myself, not from a competitive perspective, but from a lifestyle perspective.

My last post recorded my walking on a daily basis, and I offer an update thru today:

3/15/08 Saturday 6.5 miles (odometer measured)
3/16/08 Sunday 3.5 miles (odometer measured)
3/17/08 Monday 2 miles (odometer measured)
3/18/08 Tuesday 2 miles (odometer measured)
3/19/08 Wednesday 2 miles (odometer measured)
3/20/08 Thursday 2 miles (odometer measured)
3/21/08 Friday 2 miles (odometer measured)
3/22/08 Saturday 3 miles (odometer measured)
3/23/08 Sunday 3.5 miles (odometer measured)

... and my intention is to walk at least 30 minutes every day until I can't.

This weeks progress ...

Hmmm ... interesting

Let's start the week with Saturday with regards to walking ...

Saturday 6.5 miles (odometer measured)
Sunday 3.5 miles (odometer measured)
Monday 2 miles (odometer measured)
Tuesday 2 miles (odometer measured)
Wednesday 2 miles (odometer measured)

Not bad for an old guy ... the weekday 2 miles are a quick 30 minutes as soon as I get home from the office. A little tough in the Florida heat in late afternoon ... but the 30 minutes flies, and I take a bottle of water to drink or to pour over my head.

I might start using a water soaked headband ... aka the 60's do rag!

If you are a walker in the South let me know how you cope with the heat!

Been busy figuring out a walking plan for myself!

OK ... so I have good walking days, and no walking days!

I now know from reading, and research, that we really need a minimum of 5 days of at least 30 min. of vigorus activity to maintain good health.

Well doing anything Mon-Fri always has been a challenge, especially when you have become the defacto chef in the family. Weep all my pretty ones ... I have been taken!

So I've been talking to myself lately (kinda scary) ... my options are limited and I need to find a solution, which I think I have.

It appears from what I've been reading that 150 min. per week of vigorus physical activity is the minimum required to maintain good physical health. It also seems that the 150 min. per week is kind of open ended, where you can do 15 ten minute sessions, or three 50 minute sessions.

If this is a fact then I am going to target a 10 mile minium per week, since I have been averaging a good 15 min per mile. This allows me long walks on the weekend when I have the time, and shorter walks during the work week.

Stay tuned since I have started this plan this weekend and will detail in a few days.

Any one else work out a similar plan? Let me know!

Arthritis Foundation Walks

Earlier this week found a walk that is sceduled for April 13, 2008 right in my own backyard. So I decided to register for the walk.

In looking over the site materials, and learning a little about arthritis, and the arthritis foundation, I decided to help raise money for the foundation, since my wife's cousin Peggy has been graciously dealing with arthritis for way too long.

New personal best distance ... 6 miles!

A couple of weeks ago I doubled my long walk of three miles in about 90 minutes. It really felt good, and I think that I will be able to do a half marathon by end of year!

Been a while ....

Wow ... time has flown ... been quite involved in moving our http://www.activeauthority.com/ website from Starmark to Network Solutions. The Network Solutions hosting, and shopping cart technology are far superior to the systems and technology at Starmark. Additionally NS support is far superior to Starmark ... and incredibly cost effective.

We turned on the new site on Monday 3/3/08 without a hitch and are processing orders flawlessly.

Go visit ... it's so much easier to use, and navigate ... you will be impressed!
