Simple Walking Tips

(HealthDay News) -- Walking is a safe and easy way to get exercise, but you should maintain proper form to prevent injury.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions:

* Swing your arms as you walk.
* Walk with your head up, and make sure your back is straight.
* Keep your abdomen flat.
* Point your toes straight ahead.
* Walk with a long, easy stride that doesn't strain you.

Sunday ... Nov 16

Great walking time in South Florida ... dry, and temp under 60 degrees, with a fairly sharp wind ... actually makes walking in the full sun possible ... did 3 miles today from home to the clubhouse in Verona lakes. This is a great walk since there is a slight hill over the Valencia Shores road whihc give the walk just an edge, especially if you kick up the pace on the uphill!

Really craving a big old breakfast of eggs, bacon, and home fries ... however will do some Fiber One (bran flakes and raisins) with some fat free yogurt, and perhaps a bananna!

Yikes ... I'm really getting into this!

Good news for Ed ...

Last month I discovered that my cholesterol was off the chart, and have been dieting, eating healthy, and taking Lipitor ... well 7 weeks later I've lost 13lbs, and my total cholesterol is down 50% with great LDL and HDL numbers.

Oatmeal rules!

My new walk ...

This is my new walk from my new home to where I used to live in Venetian Isles, Boynton Beach! Great walk with a nice little hill (there are few hills in FL!) to boost the heart rate!

Map your walks ...

I found this web site to be helpful in measuring your map routes. I use is all the time and it's kind of fun to visualize on a map your various walking routes. Also helps in validating your pedometer distance. www.mapmywalk.com

Been a long time ....

Well, once again, I have to apologize for the time between posts, but a lot has happened in my life in the last few months.

First thing is, I bought a house in South Florida, and moved out of the apartment in Coral Springs. Bye the way ... the apartments are 'The Hampton's on Heron Bay', and are supposed to be upscale ... not upscale at all, just expensive, and getting pretty old in the tooth. I wouldn't bother looking at these with all the new apartments around!

We bought our new home in Palm Beach County, in south Lake Worth, just on the border with Boynton Beach. We like the area much better then Coral Springs, which was just too crowded, and not nearly as rural as the western part of Palm Beach County. We are very close to the largest equestrian center in the south, and still have a feeling of rural old Florida. We also lived in the area prior to moving to Colorado, so there is a feeling of coming home!

Bye the way we got a great deal, on a gorgeous house ... great time to buy in Florida! If you need a great real estate person in South Florida ... call my guy ... Jeff Katz www.jeffreyjkatz.com .

Prior to moving in the new house, I decided (actually had a low grade toothache) to go to the dentist ... another event with many years between visits. Had 2 wisdom teeth extracted in July, a root canal, a crown, and I just had some peridontal sugery 2 weeks ago. Still have some additional work to be done but the worst is behind me.

Again I found a great dental group ... Dr. AJ, and Dr. Waldee ... they really took care of me, and I really appreicate their skills and 'bedside' mannner! www.sleepdentists.com

Also decided to go and get a long awaited physical, which for the most part turned out well. The only thing that poped up was a very large red flag regarding my cholesterol. Basically it's off the chart, and I have since started in a statin called Lipitor.

In addition to the medication I have started to diet for the first time in my life (lost 10 lbs. in a little over a month), and have begun to seriously study nutrition, and healthy cooking. Needless to say, my wife is doing the I told you so routine ... I now understand that bacon is not a good evening snack! ;-)

So all in all ... life is good, but the twist and turns shake you in to reality.

My new life, especially from a nutrition and fitness perspective, is a good thing, and it is just the encouragement I needed to commit myself to wellness!
